15th Annual Typologies Workshop held in Vietnam

The government of Vietnam hosted the APG’s 15th Annual Typologies Workshop and Capacity Building Seminars in Hanoi from 19 to 23 November 2012.

The workshop was jointly chaired by Mr Razim Buksh, Director of Fiji’s FIU and Mr. Nguyen Huu Nghia, Chief Director of Banking Supervisory Agency, State Bank of Vietnam and was attended by more than 220 delegates from over 30 APG members and 8 organisations.

 Delegates to this workshop discussed the widest scope of topics yet including:

 • Hawala and underground banking;

• Money laundering and terrorist financing vulnerabilities in the following sectors: gold and gem dealers, real estate agents, lawyers and accountants (in support of the FATF global project on lawyers, Egmont project on gems and APEC project on DNFBPs);

• Issues relating to the laundering the proceeds of corruption; • Identifying and investigating trade-based money laundering and the proceeds of tax offences;

• Exploring issues relating to the policy gap in implementing recovering the proceeds of crime and prosecuting money laundering;

• Building strategic partnerships between government and the private sector on AML/CFT risks / vulnerabilities and responses (a new initiative of the APG to support ongoing regional engagement with the private sector on typologies).

The workshop was financially supported by the government of the United States and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
