APG hosts sub-regional workshop on NPOs for Pacific Island members

07 December, 2012

The ‘APG Sub-regional Workshop on Not-for-Profit Organisations for Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, with the International Centre of Not-for-profit Law’ (ICNL) and with funding from Chinese Taipei, was held at the APG Secretariat offices in Sydney, Australia from 4 – 7 December 2012.

The workshop developed issues originally discussed at a similarly focused UN workshop for Pacific jurisdictions in Auckland, New Zealand, November 2011 and provided a forum to engage in practical exercises that:
  • Highlighted the benefits of registering NPOs and facilitated development of a registration factsheet
  • Afforded an opportunity for delegates to learn more about the FATF standard on NPOs and how its implementation is closely integrated with regular good governance of NPOs;
  • Enabled delegates to consider and analyse the risks and vulnerabilities of the NPO sector in their jurisdictions which will assist them in filtering out low-risk organisations and being able to focus resources on organisations at higher risk of being exploited, and
  • Brought home the importance of communication and collaboration in promoting legislative review and general reform related to NPOs.

Delegates were encouraged to build on the connections made during the workshop, both domestically and regionally, in order to discuss common issues and advance the work undertaken at the workshop.

Experts from the Australian Council for International Development, the Australian Federal Police, ICNL, King & Wood Mallesons law firm and the APG Secretariat facilitated at this workshop.

On behalf of the APG Co-Chairs the Secretariat would like to thank the government of Chinese Taipei for funding this workshop, including sponsoring the delegates to attend.
