APG Workshop on Revised FATF Standards & Pacific Typologies Workshop

04 March, 2013

Australia will host two workshops during the week of 4-8 March 2013 in Brisbane, Queensland as follows:

1. APG Workshop on Revised FATF Standards, 4-6 March 2013; and
2. Pacific Typologies Workshop, 6-8 March 2013.

APG Workshop on Revised FATF Standards

The purpose of this workshop is to brief APG members on the key changes to the FATF Recommendations adopted in February 2012 and the assessment methodology to be adopted shortly. The APG has already conducted two workshops on this topic within the Asia-Pacific region and both have been well received by delegates. The workshops involve scenarios designed to give delegates an opportunity to apply the new standards.

Pacific Typologies Workshop

The Pacific Typologies Workshop will discuss cases and emerging money laundering and terrorist financing trends in the Pacific. One of the aims of the workshop is to develop typologies reports that will provide information on methods and trends of interest beyond the Pacific to the wider APG region. This workshop (held by AUSTRAC and supported by the APG) is the third major regional initiative under the AusAID funded Pacific Region Financial Intelligence Units Sustainability and Capacity Building Project (2010-2013).

The following topics will be discussed:

  • Money laundering and fraud: A Pacific focus;
  • Laundering the proceeds of corruption;
  • Money laundering and terrorist financing risks facing offshore financial centres in the Pacific; and
  • Trans-Pacific drug routes.

Both workshops will receive the financial support of

  • Government of Australia (AUSTRAC and AusAID);
  • Pacific Island Forum Secretariat; and
  • Government of the United States (State Department).
