At the APG's first Annual Meeting in Tokyo, Japan (March 1998) the membership decided to appoint two co-chairs. The first would be a permanent chair held by Australia and the second would be a rotating chair to be occupied for a period of two years by one of the other APG members. Australia's permanent chair is based on the arrangements with the group to host the Secretariat (click on the button to the left relating to the Secretariat).
The current Co-Chairs are Commissioner Mick Keelty (Australia) and Mr Ong Hian Sun (Singapore). Their resumes are as follows:
Commissioner Mick Keelty (Australia) - appointed 2003
Commissioner Keelty is the Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) with more than 30 years experience in law enforcement. He was appointed as the Commissioner in April 2001 from within the ranks of the AFP. The AFP is Australia's national policing agency and has officers based at 30 posts in 25 countries. Commissioner Keelty is also Chair of the Board for the Australian Crime Commission and is a member of the Business Government Advisory Group on National Security, a forum for high-level dialogue between business and government on national security in Australia.
As AFP Commissioner, Mr Keelty assumes the role of representative of Interpol in Australia. He is also one of 21 members on the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police Committee and holds a position on the Board of Government of the Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation (JCLEC) - an Australian/Indonesian capacity building initiative based in Semarang, Indonesia.
Mr Ong Hian Sun LLM (Singapore) - appointed 2008
Mr Ong Hian Sun is an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore. He joined the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) of Singapore in September 1989 and began his legal career as a Deputy Public Prosecutor. From September 1989 until February 2008, he held various positions as Senior State Counsel dealing with the prosecutions in the High Court for capital and non-capital offences and overseeing the conduct of prosecution of the Corruption and Specialist Crimes Directorate as well as the Financial & Securities Offences Directorate of the Criminal Justice Division in the AGC. In June 2008, he was appointed as the Director of the Commercial Affairs Department which is the key investigation agency in Singapore involved in combating commercial crime, money laundering and financing of terrorism.
Mr Ong Hian Sun obtained his LLB (Hons) from the National University of Singapore and his LLM from the University of London. Mr Ong Hian Sun formally assumed his appointment on 11 July 2008 at the APG's 11th Annual Meeting in Bali, Indonesia. His term is for two years (July 2008 to July 2010).
